First Year Experience 2011 recap

Standing for 20 hours talking to educators might not sound like the world’s best way to spend your birthday/Superbowl weekend, but that’s exactly what I did at the First Year Experience Conference in Atlanta. And I had fun doing it. Here’s why…

This elevator

Seriously how cool is that? I was on the 25th floor. I’d be lying if I didn’t fess-up to pretending I was in a Sci-Fi movie starring Bruce Willis and Jackie Chan. I was just waiting for one of them to crash through the glass wall of the elevator. Yippee ki-yay mother…

My publisher (John Wiley & Sons) rocks!

My book has been out for two years and here they are sending me to Atlanta putting me up…

This is My Normal

I can’t wait for the release of the blooper reel of the “This is My Normal” documentary shot by Wonderkind Studios & Rule29 for Life in Abundance. I ruined more than a few shots and it would probably be a Kelsey Blooper reel. You can see me getting my key grip on at 29 seconds (look at that form!).

But seriously, my time in Kenya with the gang that made this film was amazing. I’ll never forget it. I knew that if the documentary that resulted captured 1% of the vibe and energy and spirit of the slums it will change a little something in everyone who watches it. I think the film far exceeds this and I hope that you all get a chance to see it someday.

Here’s…

2010

KelseyHarperBeach

In order to retain my blogging license I’m required by law to recap all that was 2010.

Personal

  • Baby #2 is on the way. Pray for us! Annie is feeling great. We find out the gender on Tuesday!
  • Annie put up with me for another year, despite a 6-week trip to Africa, a few week-long speaking engagements, and a two week trip to NYC. However, my daughter was far less pleased with my absences. It’s tougher to leave now, but doing what I do is important to me, so rewarding, and important to my family.
  • I gave away $10 every Tuesday for the entire year. (okay so I missed some Tuesdays but I always made…

In Relevant: One Day in the Slum

You won’t here me talk or write about my faith very often. In the January/February issue of Relevant Magazine which just hit the stands, I made an exception. I’m really proud of this piece. It wasn’t easy to write. Before you can be honest with the reader, you’ve got to be honest with yourself. I spent a lot of time staring inward with this one. I hope you like it.

Of Faith and Farts (not necessarily in that order)

fireI had nothing to do with this. I swear. (Photo from Flickr Creative Commons by k.ivoutin)

Today I had two pieces come out. One on farts and one on faith.

Farts on a Plane

Okay, that’s not what I actually titled it but that’s what I call it when I talk to myself, has been entertaining audiences across the country since this spring. I should say mostly entertaining audiences. It really depends on the audience. Basically it’s an 800-word true-life fart joke. I once read it in a church. I’m not sure that was the greatest idea. Laughing at farts in a church just seems wrong. Still, if it grabs the audience…

'Where Am I Wearing" Author visits Rockford_1289405176707

I’ve never been to Burma. But somebody forgot to tell that to the folks at the CBS-Affiliate in Rockford, Illinois. They interviewed me while I was at Rockford College and reported that Burma was one of the countries I visited on my Where Am I Wearing quest.

You can see the interview here.

The station sent one fella out. He seemed hurried, apparently not even having the time to say hello when he walked in the room. He started to set up his equipment without so much as a nod of acknowledgment. Not a “Hi, I’m Jim” or a “I hate my job….

Judging my book by its (biceps) cover

I’m not sure about the cover of my book.

Lately, since I’ve been visiting universities where the students have been assigned the book, I’ve been getting, “I got your book and I was like…man…this book looks really boring,” or something along those lines. Thankfully this is usually followed up with “…and I really liked it.” Of course the folks who don’t like it probably rushed out of the room after my talk. Because what kind of jackass waits in line to tell an author that his book sucked?

I’ve had several professors tell me that for many of their students this is the first book that they’ve really dug into. Essentially, the students have never met a book they liked regardless of the cover. Still, I’m not sure…
