I remember sitting in some of our intercultural studies classes when America was gearing for war in the Middle East, and our prof was just beside himself at the rhetoric coming from the American side because it was so painfully and blatantly ignorant of the cultural forces at play – making grand appeals to American values when the non-Americans in question don’t feel the same way about those values.

anthropologists rule. there ought to be a club or something.

There is a lot of debate around this issue. I can see it both ways, but, for the most part I think this sounds like a good idea.
